Akamedia Japan Co., Ltd. (Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Mairu Kikuchi) is pleased to announce that it has obtained a patent related to verifying the identity of participants during online lectures, within our next-generation e-learning system “ONLINE FACE.”

With this patented technology, identity verification and fraud prevention during online courses can be automatically handled by the system, without human effort, using a proprietary algorithm-driven AI facial-recognition process.
With conventional methods of identity verification in online learning, a participant need only log in with an ID and password, or perform an identity check at set intervals or when prompted during a course, meaning there was no guarantee that the same person continuously attended the lecture from start to finish — an issue for both fraud prevention and the quality of learning.
In other words, if verification is performed at a fixed interval such as every three or five minutes, participants would eventually learn the timing and could step away to watch television, eat, or use the restroom, making it insufficient to consider the lecture properly attended.
“ONLINE FACE,” on the other hand, uses this patented AI-authentication algorithm to automatically verify a participant’s identity multiple times at random intervals, without the participant noticing.
Verification may occur two or three times within one minute, or once every three minutes; the timing of verification changes every time a course is taken.
Because participants do not know when or how often verification will occur, this maintains an appropriate level of attentiveness even online, preventing early departure, dozing off, and proxy attendance, and can be expected to deliver high-quality learning outcomes and improved educational standards.
In addition, to prevent fraud and impersonation, no preceding notice or on-screen indication such as “verification will now take place” is shown; verification is performed automatically in the background of the system without the participant’s awareness.
Because no device operation is required each time verification occurs, it does not interrupt attendance, making high-quality online conversion and DX achievable.

■ About ONLINE FACE
ONLINE FACE is an e-learning system that, through the world’s first proprietary, patented AI technology, automatically performs identity verification and fraud prevention in an online environment.
By meeting standards set by various government ministries and agencies, it has been widely adopted for statutory training and examinations related to national qualifications, as well as for the DX and online conversion of site-entrant education, safety training, and in-house training at factories, construction sites, and other locations.
It also eliminates the need to arrange a venue each time, secure instructors’ time, and account for trainees’ travel time as in the past, making it a tool that reduces costs while comprehensively improving productivity.
